The Peace Journalism Lab of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has been internationally recognized at the VOICES – European Festival for Journalism and Media Literacy, receiving the prestigious award in the «Digital Parenting & Generations» category. This distinction, presented by the European Association for Viewers Interests (EAVI – Media Literacy for Citizenship), highlights the Lab’s commitment to digital literacy and intergenerational education.
The award, granted during the VOICES Festival in Zagreb, Croatia, on February 28, 2025, acknowledges the MELISE Project (Media Literacy for Senior Citizens in Europe), which aims to empower elderly citizens to navigate the digital world safely and critically. Under the scientific supervision of Professor Nikos Panagiotou, the research team—Apostolos Karampaglidis, Ioanna Georgia Eskiadi, and Georgios Karagiórgos—has developed innovative educational tools to help seniors:
✅ Identify fake news and misinformation
✅ Protect their personal data and online privacy
✅ Recognize bias and manipulation in media content
The VOICES Festival is one of Europe’s leading events in journalism and media literacy, advocating for media freedom and pluralism as essential pillars of democracy. Since its launch in Florence in 2024, the festival has gathered thousands of participants, including journalists, educators, and media experts.
This recognition reinforces the MELISE Project’s mission to combat misinformation and bridge the digital divide among generations. It also underscores the vital role of academic research in shaping an informed and resilient society.
